Hugo Barajas was always drawing as a small child in Guadalajara (…). Throughout all these times Hugo continued to paint and study art on his own, (…) He has participated in and received awards in major museum competitions in Mexico, including at the Hospicio Cultural Cabañas, the second largest art museum in Mexico. He has been selected to have work in the famous Biennale of Florence in December, 2011. He currently is preparing for an exhibit to be held in december 2010 in Montreal, Canada at the Consul General of Mexico that will feature a collection of fused glass creations that range in size up to 30 by 60 inches. Hugo spends a few months in Quebec every year and has had several exhibitions in galleries in Montreal and throughout the province. His work was recently collected by the principal founder of the famous Cirque du Soleil, which started in Quebec.   Barajas acknowledges influence by the late Mexican master, Rufino Tamayo, and by Pablo Picasso. However, although some of his work shows “cubist” tendencies, Hugo prefers to call his style, “constructivismo,” which refers to his perspective of working on different levels of the visual matrix and accentuating that by limiting himself to the primary colors and black and white. Temporary exhibition about Orest Tataryn, a neon artist.
This body of work looks at the historical power of neon text in signage in relationship to contemporary concerns that address textuality and linguistics. The manipulated word form, layout and meaning of the pieces is arrived at through various conceptual devices such as mirroring, abbreviation, misspelling, repetition and ideograms.

Feu VERRE ! Pour l’exposition Coup de coeur du public

The People’s Choice Award is one of the major attractions at the Salon, its goals is to present unique pieces created by the artisans to the general public.
While visiting the Salon, visitors can vote for their favourite piece around the theme Feu VERRE! as part of the Montreal City of Glass event. A draw will be made from the votes; the winner will receive a gift card worth $500, redeemable at SMAQ. The draw will take place on December 19.

All exhibitors at the Salon, not just glass craftsmen, are invited to participate in the exhibition. Whether they work with wood, ceramic, textile, leather and animal skins, metal, paper or any other material, they will add glass to their work and will be there to greet you.
